Two women were arrested Tuesday after they allegedly name-called their complainant in a private chat group on Facebook in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.
According to details of the case filed against the suspects, they were gossiping and calling the complainant negative names, such as "Unano" (short), in their private chat group.
The women admitted to the complaints but said that the matter could have been settled outside of court. They were charged with cyber libel.
"We asked for forgiveness personally but instead she filed a case against us," said "Jen," one of the suspects.
Police Lt. Col. Honesto Lazo, deputy chief of the Anti-Cybercrime group in Central Visayas, said that when a chat group has more than one member, it is considered public.
The elements of cyber libel include malicious words and content being publicized in the group and clear identification of the person, said Lazo.
"This serves as a lesson learned for everyone to be careful what they comment or post on social media," he said.
He added status and photos which point out to a particular person, is also included in the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
