Nine people were rescued from a condominium building in Davao City that sustained heavy damage when a 6.5 magnitude quake struck Thursday morning.

Authorities said eight tenants of the Ecoland 4000 condominium building sustained minor injuries while one resident was brought to hospital due to head injuries caused by falling debris.

Davao City Police spokesperson Captain Nolan Tagsip confirmed there were 15 to 20 occupants inside the Himeji Building when the powerful tremor struck on Thursday morning, the third major shock to hit Mindanao in two weeks.

The police spokesperson said some of the rescuers were already inside the building to check if there were still people left inside the units.

The building is a 5-story structure, Tagsip said, and the ground floor where the carpark is located collapsed.

The front portion of the building also sustained huge cracks with some glass windows broken.

The building was already badly damaged in the October 29 earthquake, but it worsened following the latest temblor.

On Wednesday, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office inspected the building and recommended to management that it is not safe for habitation. Still, some tenants decided to stay.
