Zamboanga City has been placed under a state of calamity after being battered by weather conditions caused by the intertropical convergence zone since Sunday.

In a special session Thursday afternoon, city councilors unanimously voted in favor of the declaration.

Zamboanga City vice-mayor Cesar Iturralde said this will fast-track the release of calamity funds to aid residents who lost their homes and help farmers in the agriculture and aquaculture sectors.

According to the City Social Welfare Office, more than 150 houses were totally damaged because of floods and strong winds while 300 more were partially damaged.

Meanwhile, 4,000 families or at least 7,000 individuals were temporarily evacuated.

More than P50 million worth of damaged crops was also reported by the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, which recommended that a state of calamity be declared.
