MANILA – Supreme Court Associate Justices Diosdado Peralta and Estela Perlas-Bernabe topped the shortlist of the Judicial and Bar Council for the next chief justice.
Peralta and Bernabe both got 7 votes.
Associate Justices Andres Reyes Jr. got 4 votes while Associate Justice Jose Reyes Jr. got 1 vote.
The incumbent chief justice, Lucas Bersamin, will step down on Oct. 18 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.
President Rodrigo Duterte is mandated by the Constitution to choose the next chief justice from the shortlist within 90 days of the vacancy.
