MANILA - Some colleagues are pushing for the suspension from work of party-list lawmaker John Bertiz over his viral confrontation with a security screener at the country's main airport.
A clip recently uploaded by several Facebook pages shows the ACTS-OFW party-list representative supposedly refusing to remove his shoes as he passed through a metal detector at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminal 2.
He then raised what appeared to be his security ID, inches away from the face of a screener manning the area. The congressman snatched off the airport personnel's own ID, walking away with it and out of the video's frame.
The AKO Bicol party-list wants Bertiz to be reprimanded and suspended by for 15 days to a month, its representative, Rodel Batocabe told ABS-CBN News on Friday.
The House ethics panel met last Wednesday over the Bertiz incident.
Under House rules, the committee can recommend punishment for members found to have violated the Code of Conduct for public officials, and for disorderly behavior.
The House may then reprimand, suspend or expel an erring member.
Bertiz has apologized for his behavior towards the airport screener, blaming stress and his "monthly period" for his attitude.
His comment on monthly period did not sit well with Gabriela party-list and some women.
Last month, Bertiz also drew flak for joking that a new batch of engineers will not get their licenses from the Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) if they are not familiar with Special Assistant to the President Bong Go, who was supposed to speak at their oath-taking ceremony.
