MANILA - Sen. Grace Poe told authorities of South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) to reduce toll rates for motorists that are experiencing daily traffic jams in the thoroughfare due to the ongoing Skyway extension project.
"Motorists deserve to pay less for the trouble the gridlock is causing due to the extension project. Sa mala-prusisyong usad ng trapiko dahil dito, masama bang hilinging kaltasan ang toll sa mga motorista?" Poe said in a statement Friday.
(Motorists deserve to pay less for the trouble the gridlock is causing due to the extension project. In this procession-like traffic jam, is it too much to ask for slashing toll rates for the motorists?)
She said slashing of SLEX toll fees will show that authorities feel the riding public's distress.
The Skyway O&M Corporation (SOMCO) last September started installing posts in the northbound lane for the 5-kilometer Skyway extension that will eliminate the need for motorists to pass by the Alabang viaduct, a perennial traffic chokepoint.
SOMCO aims to complete the Skyway extension by December 2020.
“Nagbabayad tayo ng toll dahil gusto natin ng mabilis na biyahe, kaya nga expressway. Pero ngayon, 28 kilometro ang ginagapang ng ating mga kababayan araw-araw,” Poe said.
(We pay toll fees because we want a fast trip, that's why it's an expressway. But now, our fellow motorists move slow.)
Abraham Sales, executive director of the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB), said they would discuss Poe’s proposal.
