MANILA (2nd UPDATE) - Seven members of a dragon boat team died Wednesday after their vessel sank in the waters of Boracay island, Aklan.
Fourteen members of the Boracay Dragon Boat Team survived the incident, the Philippine Coast Guard said.
Three of the fatalities were female while 4 were male, according to PCG spokesperson Armand Balilo.
The boat was "battered by big waves and strong winds," he said.
Jaylord Violanda, one of the survivors, said they were 300 meters away from the shore of Tulubhan when their boat accumulated water.
Some of the members began to swim to the shore while others held on to the boat, Violanda said.
The team was about to practice for an upcoming international competition, the Coast Guard said.
