ZAMBOANGA CITY – Flash floods hit some areas in the city on Friday morning forcing the evacuation of hundreds of families from one of the affected barangays.
In Barangay Tumaga, around 200 families were evacuated to the Catalina Viudad de Jalon Elementary School due to flooding.
One of the evacuees said they did not expect the water to reach their 2-story home. Luckily, a rescue team arrived and brought her son and family to the school.
Several rescue teams were deployed to different villages where flooding was reported.
In Barangay Sangali, at least 100 individuals were rescued by members of the Philippine Coast Guard. Dozens more were rescued in the villages of San Jose Gusu, Guiwan, Tugbungan and Baliwasan. The villages are located in low-lying areas and close to rivers.
Meanwhile, flooding also affected agriculture as hectares of vegetables and rice fields are under water.
The Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said 2 houses were destroyed in Barangay Tumaga. A report at noon Friday said another 15 were damaged but this has yet to be confirmed.
The local government of Zamboanga City suspended classes in all levels Friday due to bad weather caused by an enhanced southwest monsoon.
Boat trips were also cancelled due to big waves.
