MANILA - The health department on Friday prohibited residents near the Marikina River from fishing and swimming in the waterway after over 50 dead pigs washed ashore in the area.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque III gave the order to residents of Barangay Tumana, saying they might get typhoid, cholera, amoeba, and gastroenteritis from the river.
Some 55 dead pigs were sighted and fished out of the Tumana and Brgy. Nangka parts of the river. Local government officials said the dead pigs might be infected with the African swine fever.
Duque said the dead hogs should be disposed properly to avoid infection.
He advised residents to avoid the river until investigation on the pigs' deaths concludes.
