MANILA - Convicted drug lords posing as sick inmates inside the New Bilibid Prisons use its hospital’s ward as a venue for their illegal drug trade, Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go said Tuesday.
The senator said he got the information from one of the inmates he met on Monday during his visit at the minimum security compound. The inmate was said to be knowledgeable about what was happening inside the facility.
“Merong (There's an) alleged report of corruption dito sa (here in) New Bilibid Prison hospital. Meron daw pong binebentang (There's a supposed selling of) hospital pass at (and) illegal drug trade continues in the NBP with the NBP hospital as the new venue for illegal drug transactions,” he said.
Most of the drug transactions take place in Medical ward 3 of Building 14, he added.
Those using the ward are said to be “triad members” or their counterparts inside the national penitentiary, according to Go.
Go, however, begged off from naming the price range of the so-called hospital pass, saying he has already asked the National Bureau of Investigation to look into the matter.
Many inmates, he said, have also appealed to him to provide dialysis and other medical equipment to prevent Bureau of Corrections officials from bringing inmates outside of the NBP hospitals.
Go said he has also asked the Department of Health to evaluate the status of medicine distribution in the NBP.
