MANILA - Palace spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Tuesday he is ready to face the Senate if he will be called by the legislative body regarding accusations over convicted rapist-killer Antonio Sanchez.

"Of course, of course," Panelo told radio DZMM, when asked if he would be willing to answer questions in an ongoing Senate hearing over Sanchez and the good conduct time allowance (GCTA) law.

Sanchez, who was convicted in 1995 for the rape-slay of Eileen Sarmenta and torture-killing of Allan Gomez in 1993, was recommended to be released along with 11,000 convicts out of "good behavior" last August.

But the decision was reversed amid public uproar. Documents showed that officials have written to the Board of Pardons and Parole (BPP) regarding Sanchez's plea to be freed.

Among them was Panelo, who was Sanchez's defense counsel in the 1993 case. The spokesman asked about the executive clemency in a letter dated Feb. 26., BPP earlier said.

Panelo, however, said he "referred" only the letter of the family of Sanchez to the BPP regarding the convict's plea, but clarified that he “never recommended anything.”
