MANILA - The Philippine government will extend P25,000 in financial aid to farmers in Ilocos Norte after tropical storm Ineng left millions worth of damage to agriculture in the province.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar said he would fly to Laoag on Monday to check the destruction left by the storm.

He said farmers can avail of a P25,000 loan assistance package which they can pay in 3 years with no interest.

"Sure loan assistance na P25,000, zero interest, payable in 3 years,” Dar told reporters.

The northern Luzon province was placed under a state of calamity, Saturday, after Ineng's heavy rains left 2 people dead, and inundated farmlands, leaving cows drowned and crops submerged in floods, according to earlier reports.

Damage to agriculture is estimated to have reached P20 million while damage to infrastructure was seen at P300 million, according to the latest report of the Ilocos Norte Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
