A soldier was killed while another was wounded after they were attacked by a lawless group in Lamitan, Basilan on Sunday night.
The two soldiers were on board a motorcycle, heading to the town of Ungkaya Pukan, when they fired upon by members of the Anjabins group, according to Western Mindanao Command spokesman Cap. Arvin Encinas.
One of the soldiers was able to retaliate. However, he was pursued by the armed men and sustained several gunshot wounds.
Encinas said the same group attacked members of the 74th Infantry Battalion in 2018 and earlier this year in Basilan.
The military said it considers the series of attacks as a retaliation of the group following the arrest of their kin Jerry Anjabin in the town of Mohammad Ajul, Basilan last year.
