MANILA - The government is checking if foreigners working in offshore gaming operations in the country possess legitimate work permits, a Labor official said Sunday.
Labor Undersecretary Ana Dione said they are also checking whether these foreigners are engaging in jobs that can be accomplished by Filipinos.
"Ongoing ang usapin na pag-aaralan 'yong Pogo (Philippine offshore gaming operations) industry. Tingnan natin, ayaw nating ibigay 'yong kayang gawin ng mga Pilipino," Dione said.
Labor laws prohibit foreign workers from working in jobs that can be done by Filipinos, such as those in construction.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is also inspecting establishments employing foreign workers, said Dione.
So far, according to Dione, the agency has checked on 147 establishments in Metro Manila.
