Two persons with flu-like symptoms who may have been exposed to chickens hit by the avian flu have tested negative for the virus, an official said.

Swab and blood tests results showed that two people who were in isolation were negative for bird flu, Health Assistant Secretary Eric Tayag said.

The two were examined in Research Institute for Tropical Medicine.

Tayag said the two were immediately removed from isolation but were advised to continue to take Oseltamivir, an antiviral medication used to treat and prevent influenza.

Tayag added that those who are culling in Pampanga were also given Oseltamivir as a preventive measure.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Saturday began culling fowls in the barangays of San Carlos and Sta. Rita in San Luis town after the country recorded its first bird-flu outbreak Friday.

The DOH, however, reminded the public that the virus in San Luis, Pampanga is not airborne and human-to-human transmission is not possible.

Only those who are exposed to the farms and fowls in San Luis are being monitored, and only these exposures can lead to a case of chicken-to-human transmission of bird flu, the DOH said.

The health department will continue to monitor and conduct random testing to those exposed in the farms in Pampanga, he added.
