MANILA - Rains dumped Saturday by the southwest monsoon in Metro Manila was half the amount that of tropical storm Ondoy in 2009, data from a scientific research institute showed.

Based on Manila Observatory's monitoring, the highest accumulated rainfall in the past 24 hours was recorded in Holy Spirit, Quezon City with 236 millimeters.

It was followed by San Mateo, Rizal with 220 mm and Nangka, Marikina with 215 mm.

The least amount of rains was monitored in Sucat, Parañaque with 77mm, the study revealed.

In 2009, Ondoy dumped 455 mm of rain over a 24-hour period.

Saturday's heavy downpour inundated the capital and large parts of Luzon and displaced thousands of families.

The Manila Observatory is an institution run by the Jesuits that does research work in atmospheric and earth science in the Philippines.
