MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte said Thursday he is about to do "something drastic" in the coming days.
“I will explain in the coming days but I’m about to do something drastic. It will not sit well with everybody, maybe including you but it is needed,” Duterte told officials of the Bureau of Fire Protection in his speech during their anniversary celebration at the PICC in Pasay.
The President’s remarks come as the Palace said that Duterte can opt to declare martial law in Negros Island to quell what they call as lawless violence in the region.
It is also because of the spate of killings in Negros Oriental that Duterte considers arming firemen to help in maintaining peace and order.
"You have to help in the maintenance of law and order. Do not limit yourself diyan sa ano. Kulang nga tayo ng tao eh," he said.
Malacañang earlier claimed that the communist New People’s Army (NPA) in Negros has turned the province into a "quasi-state" by exploiting the unrest from land disputes.
In his speech, Duterte warned the NPA to stop the killings, as he raged about the recent murders of 4 policemen by communist rebels.
“Itong NPA nagwa-warning ako, this cannot go on,” Duterte said, as he said that he has own sparrow units looking for them.
Duterte, meanwhile, reminded the public that he does not intend to become a dictator.
“Sabi ko sa inyo, wala akong ambisyong maging diktador. The day na ayaw kong bumaba sa Malacanang, patayin ninyo ako,” Duterte said.
