(UPDATE) Some families of those who perished in a series of interconnected earthquakes that shook Batanes on Saturday decided to bury their dead on the same day.

According to Dan Esdicul, of the provincial disaster-mitigation office, residents were concerned that a supply of formaldehyde, an embalming agent, was not available right away.

"Lima sa kanila inilibing agad [kasi] walang formalin agad na-nag-arrive doon," Esdicul told radio DZMM on Sunday.

The bodies were wrapped in white cloth, because no coffin was available, Esdicul added.

The Phivolcs said two earthquakes in the magnitude-5 range hit the northern islands on Saturday, apart from a number of aftershocks.

As of posting time, 8 people died and 100 others were injured as a result of the tremors.
