MANILA - Ombudsman Samuel Martires on Thursday said the Bureau of Customs (BOC) officials undergoing investigation for alleged corruption may face preventive suspension.
Asked if he will order the preventive suspension, Martires said it will be based on reports that will be submitted to his office.
“I don't think we can proceed with the investigation smoothly if we do not impose preventive suspension,” Martires said.
Martires ordered the investigation Wednesday after President Rodrigo Duterte met the supposedly corrupt officials of the customs bureau.
In a statement, the Office of the Ombudsman earlier said it ordered an “in-depth investigation into alleged graft and corrupt practices” by officials and employees of BOC.
The Ombudsman said the investigation may lead to filing of criminal and administrative charges against the officials in question.
