MANILA - Senator Richard Gordon urged congressmen to respect the Constitution and the branches of government amid the issue of term-sharing for speakership at the House of Representatives.

Speaking during the Kapihan sa Manila Bay at Café Adriatico on July 10, Gordon said his statement is not intended to hit lawmakers, but is a call to protect the Constitution.

He said congressmen should maintain the independence of the House of Representatives and not involve President Rodrigo Duterte in deciding who will be the next Speaker.

“Bakit nila pinipilit makialam ang Pangulo? Kahit naman sino ang manalo diyan, susunod naman iyan kay Presidente. Classic compromise iyan. Maybe they just want inner peace within their institution that’s why they let the President decide,” Gordon said.

“If I were a congressman, I would never ask the President to do that. But I would be very happy to see the term-sharing succeed later,” he added.

Duterte on Monday endorsed Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano as the next speaker of the House of Representatives.

Cayetano will be sharing his term with Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, while Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez will be the Majority leader, said Duterte.

The President has said he decided to speak up about the issue because it has been creating "so much uncertainty."
