MANILA - Malacañang on Tuesday said any coup attempts against President Rodrigo Duterte will "certainly fail."
Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo made the remark after exiled communist leader Joma Sison said the United States could order Duterte's arrest through a coup. Panelo said it was "ironic and pitiful" for Sison to rely on the US to advance his "failed rebellion."
"Mr. Sison's comment that the US could stage a coup against the Chief Executive is wishful thinking. It is an admission that his revolution has failed as he needs to call on the US to help his group to effect a leadership change in the government," he said.
"Any coup attempt against President Duterte will certainly fail. It will not get the support of a critical mass of people who remain overwhelmingly supportive of PRRD and his administration."
Panelo added that it will not have the support of the military which "fully trusts and loves the President as their commander-in-chief."
The military earlier said it is loyal to the flag and the Constitution after Duterte called on state forces to refrain from attempting a rebellion.
