MANILA—Former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Tuesday credited President Rodrigo Duterte for her freedom.
In her speech at an appreciation dinner for her, Arroyo said: “Most of all, I thank you that when you became president, you provided the atmosphere in which the Court had the freedom to acquit me of trumped-up charges my successor and your predecessor filed against me so that the Court voted 11-4 in my favor, including half of those who were appointed by my accuser.”
Duterte led congressmen, allies and supporters in honoring Arroyo during an appreciation dinner hosted by lawmakers of the 17th Congress.
In her remarks, Arroyo, known for her short temper, also acknowledged how “very difficult” she could be.
“My only regret in our relationship is that you have found me very difficult to deal with,” she said.
“It was never my intention to be difficult with you. How could it have been with all my gratitude for all that you have done for me I only wish that I had better EQ so that you would not have found me difficult to deal with.”
She also thanked Duterte for the opportunity to be Speaker, for 3 decades working together in government, and for his help fighting crime during her presidency.
Duterte was joined by Senator Christopher "Bong" Go in the Tuesday's event, which was attended by Arroyo’s family, her cabinet and staff, and other political allies such as former First Lady Imelda Marcos.
