MANILA - Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa on Thursday rejected the idea of President Rodrigo Duterte stepping down should his son, Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte, runs for House Speaker.

Dela Rosa said the decision to quit rests on Duterte, but he cautioned against such a move.

“Nasa kanya ‘yan kung tutuparin niya o hindi. Pero sa akin, bakit ka mag-resign? Kailangan ka pa namin, kailangan ka pa ng bansa,” Dela Rosa said in a forum at the Senate.

Dela Rosa, a neophyte senator, said those who are urging Duterte to make good on his promise are probably from the opposition.

“Ang gustong mag-resign siguro yung oposisyon para sila ang kapalit. ‘You must be true to your words so we can be true to our ambitions,’” he added.

Following the Constitution, Vice President Leni Robredo is the successor should Duterte leave office. She belongs to the opposition Liberal Party and is against some of the President’s key policies.

Duterte on May 27 said he would step down should Paolo run for House Speaker since there are are already too many members of their family holding public office.

The younger Duterte, who earlier rejected rumors of a possible speakership bid, however, said on Tuesday he might seek the House leadership in the 18th Congress.

Duterte’s political party, PDP-Laban, earlier endorsed Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco for House Speaker.

Malacañang has insisted that the President would refrain from endorsing any candidate for the speakership.
