MANILA - Efforts to reduce poverty will be the highlight of President Rodrigo Duterte’s fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), a Cabinet official said Wednesday.
The government is shifting its focus to sustaining the country’s economic growth and uplifting the lives of more Filipinos in the last 3 years of the Duterte administration, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said.
“Now we’re moving towards malasakit, so you’ll see more of our poverty reduction programs at ‘yan ang magiging direksyon natin sa last 3 years,” he told reporters in an interview.
(Now we’re moving towards compassion, so you’ll see more of our poverty reduction programs and that will be our direction for the last 3 years.)
Peace and order programs of the Duterte administration will still be part of the President’s speech, Nograles said.
“Yung peace and order program will obviously still be a focus but sustaining the growth, patuloy na pagbabago (continuing change), sustaining what is already accomplished [will be the highlight],” he said.
Duterte earlier this year signed into law the Magna Carta of the Poor and the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) or the government's national poverty reduction strategy.
Some 9.5 million Filipino families or a record low of 38 percent consider themselves poor as of the first quarter of 2019, according to a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey.
