MANILA- President Rodrigo Duterte has credited his fiercest critic outgoing Senator Antonio Trillanes IV for the May election victory of his former aide Christopher "Bong" Go.

Duterte said Go was elected senator because Trillanes summoned him to the Senate. It was Go's first bid for an elective post.

"Sabi ko, sinong gumawa kay Bong na senador? Trillanes, di ba? Pinatawag niya para bastusin niya, 'yan ang style eh... Bastusin niya 'yung tao, hiyain niya," he said in a speech at the oath-taking of newly-elected Davao City officials.

(I said who made Bong Go a senator? It's Trillanes right? He summoned Go to disrespect him because that's his style. He disrespects and shames people.)

Trillanes last year summoned Go to a Senate inquiry over allegations that he meddled with a multibillion-peso frigate weapons deal.

Go had previously thanked Trillanes for inviting him to the Senate for legislative inquiries.
"Pasalamat rin ako kay Trillanes, kung hindi n'ya ako tinawag d'yan baka hindi ako naging senador ngayon," Go said in May.

(I thank Trillanes. If he did not summon me there, I may not be a senator now.)

In his first foray into politics, Go placed third in the May Senate race after garnering 20,657,702 votes.

Prior to running for senator, Go served as Duterte’s aide for over 2 decades.
