MANILA (UPDATE) - President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday warned immigration officials against extorting money from foreigners.
“Itong immigration, kapag ang turista nakalabas na ng airport, nakakatak na, given so many days, huwag na huwag niyong lapitan lalo na ang mga Koreano at Intsik,” Duterte said in a speech in Cabatuan, Iloilo.
(People from immigration, if the tourists are already outside the airport, their passports already marked, don't approach them anymore, especially Koreans and Chinese).
The President said immigration personnel would sometimes make up some “drama” and then ask for money from the unwitting tourists.
“So there’s a lot of stupid things going on. Do not do that because isang mali lang, hihiritan kita. Either patayin kita o sampulan kita o itapon kita sa Jolo,” he said.
(So there’s a lot of stupid things going on. Do not do that because one mistake, I will either kill you or send you to Jolo.)
It was not immediately clear what specific incident triggered Duterte’s ire, but he has slammed abusive practices in the country’s airports in the past, such as the planting of bullets in a passenger’s baggage and pilferage of baggage of arriving passengers.
