MANILA -- Pasig Mayor-elect Vico Sotto on Sunday said he would be an "issue-based" leader, shunning the "dilawan" and "DDS" tags of opposition and administration supporters.
The 29-year-old Sotto toppled the Eusebio dynasty that was roughly his age, after serving just a single term as councilor, one of politicians who defeated political families in the May 13 vote.
"Ever since pumasok ako sa pulitika, I want to be issue-based. Basta hindi po iyung sa personalidad -- hindi po iyung dilawan or DDS," the 29-year-old Sotto said.
(Ever since I entered politics, I want to be issue-based; not on personality -- not on being dilawan or DDS.)
Sotto earlier endorsed the unsuccessful Senate run of opposition candidate Florin Hilbay, a former solicitor general and his party mate at Aksyon Demokratiko.
Asked if he feared that his support for Hilbay hurt his mayoral bid, Sotto said, "Naniniwala ako sa kaniya, kahit alam ko pong hindi s'ya siguro ganoon kasikat o ganoon kalakas."
(I believe in him even though I knew that he was not that popular or that strong.)
Days before the May 13 elections, President Rodrigo Duterte visited Pasig and lambasted an unnamed mayor for supposedly bullying a candidate.
Sotto said he has no plans of jumping ship to the PDP-Laban party that Duterte chairs.
"I decided to join a small party para bawas politika at focus lang talaga ako dito sa Pasig (so there would be less politics and I would be able to focus on Pasig)," he said.
Sotto said Pasig City should move forward under a its new leadership. Outgoing Mayor Vicente Eusebio said he would protest Sotto's win.
