MANILA - More than 3,700 new lawyers took their oath on Monday afternoon in the Supreme Court's special en banc session held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

In his inspirational speech, Associate Justice Bienvenido Reyes told the lawyers to live honest and honorable lives and to maintain the dignity of profession.

Reyes also encouraged the new lawyers to follow the lawyer's oath.

"Your membership in the Bar is both public duty and a privilege. You are tasked to promote the cause of justice and to become an instrument in delivering what is just and fair to any man who comes to the court for relief," he said.

The 2016 Bar Exams recorded a 59.06 percent passing rate, the "highest passing percentage in the history of bar exams" since 1946.

It also marks the first time in decades that the universities from Metro Manila, which usually dominate the Top 10 in Bar Exams, were edged out by schools from different regions.

The top 10 Bar passers were recognized during the event.

There were criticisms that the 2016 Bar Exams was easy. But Justice Presbitero Velasco, chair of the exams, said the test was reasonable.

Velasco, who also spoke in the event, said a big number of examinees thought the exam was difficult as shown by the median grade, 76%.

"If the exam was easy, the median grade should have been a lot higher. Whatever was said, to the 2016 soon-to-be lawyers, your mettle was tested, you were measured and found worthy," he said.-- Report by Mike Navallo, ABS-CBN News
