MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte's spokesperson Salvador Panelo on Thursday backed the credibility of the midterm elections despite thousands of faulty vote counting machines and secure digital (SD) cards.

When asked to comment on whether he thinks the May 13 polls were credible, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said: "I think so, yes, definitely."

A total of 1,665 SD cards were replaced in the midterm polls compared to just 120 in 2016, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) earlier said.

At least 961 vote-counting machines were also replaced out of a total 85,000, it added.

The Comelec has faced criticism over the delay of the delivery of real-time election results to its media partners, which the poll body attributed to an application error in the transparency server.

Panelo also downplayed this, saying: "If there are 3 receivers from 1 source, umakto doon sa 2, oh it doesn’t matter kung ma-delay ito (if it's delayed). Kasi kung delay lang, but the same number of votes pa rin, anong problema doon (Because if it was just delayed but the number of votes are the same, what's the problem there)?" he said.

"It would be different kung ma-delay mo iyong 3 ng matagal, sabay-sabay. Oh ibig sabihin walang nakaka-alam ano ba ang nangyayari, iyan ang may problema."

(It would be different if the three are delayed at the same time. That means nobody knows what's happening, that's where we'll have a problem.)

Malacañang earlier backed a legislative probe on election woes. A Senate inquiry will look into the poll glitches on June 3.
