MANILA - A portion of an escalator inside a mall in Ortigas Center in Mandaluyong City crashed to the ground floor Wednesday as heavy rains damaged part of the building's ceiling.

The underside of an escalator at the topmost floor of The Podium Mall fell all the way down to the mall’s ground floor after liquid leaked from the concrete structure, Zachary Lee, a shopper who saw the incident, told ABS-CBN News.

“Nobody is hurt which is a good thing,” said Lee, a 28-year-old tourist.

“The mall staff are trying to attend to the situation by putting barricades and controlling the leaks,” he said.

He said leaks were spotted in three other sites at the mall.

In a statement, The Podium management said Wednesday's sudden downpour damaged the mall's ceiling and that repairs would immediately begin.

"The strong rains caused damages to an isolated portion of the ceiling in The Podium. To ensure the safety of our customers, the area has been temporarily cordoned off," it said.

"No one was hurt in the incident. Repair and maintenance works will commence once the weather improves."
