CAGAYAN DE ORO -- Sangguniang Kabataan aspirants should organize programs that will address issues affecting the youth, instead of projects that only provide photo opportunities, Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos said Saturday.
“The SK should focus in addressing issues concerning the youth instead of doing the usual SK beauty pageants and tree planting activities na hindi naman dinidiligan at puro pictures lang," Marcos said at a gathering of former officials of the now-defunct Kabataang Barangay (KB) here.
“Today’s youths face many problems. Unemployment is one serious problem. Many college graduates do not have jobs. Aside from that, we also have rising cases of teenage pregnancy in the country that need to be addressed,” she added.
Marcos was the national chairman of KB, the country's first youth federation established during the administration of her late father, former President Ferdinand Marcos.
KB was abolished by the Local Government Code of 1991 and replaced with the SK.
Some 200 KB officials from Mindanao gathered in Cagayan De Oro on Saturday to celebrate the 43rd founding anniversary of the organization.
"This is not just a mere reunion with our former colleagues [in KB]. We will also discuss here the programs we crafted before that are still relevant to the present generation. Perhaps we can submit these programs to the SK so that they can continue its implementation,” said Atty. Diosdado Mahipus who chaired the KB chapter in Davao City.
SK and barangay elections will be held on May 14. The last SK polls were held in October 2010, while the last village elections were held in October 2013.
