MANILA - A soldier and two members of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) were killed in an encounter with members of the Abu Sayyaf Group in Sumisip, Basilan Wednesday morning.
According to a report from the Western Mindanao Command, the government troops were on board two motorcycles when they were engaged by the Abu Sayyaf.
The three died in the incident. The military has yet to determine the number of casualties on the enemy side.
Lieutenant General Arnel Dela Vega, commander of the Western Mindanao Command, condemned the attack.
"The recent attack is a clear manifestation that the Abu Sayyaf Group is incapable of engaging combat troops who are conducting intensified operations in the area. Rather, they are resorting to diversionary tactics to disrupt the peaceful situation in the province,” he said.
He also expressed sympathy to the family of the victims.
Joint Task Force Basilan is in hot pursuit of the fleeing bandits.
