(UPDATED) Members of the government peace panel and their counterparts from the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) agreed on an interim ceasefire in the fourth round of peace talks in The Netherlands on Wednesday.

In a document signed by the two sides Wednesday, both panels will direct their respective committees to meet, discuss, formulate, and finalize the guidelines and the ground rules of the ceasefire.

They will also put into effect the ceasefire upon the approval and signing of the guidelines and the ground rules.

The interim joint ceasefire will be effective until a permanent ceasefire agreement is agreed upon as part of the final peace agreement between the two sides.

Peace negotiations between the government and communist rebels just resumed this week after a collapse in February.

The conflict between the government and the CPP-NPA-NDF has raged since 1968 and killed more than 40,000 people. - with reports from Danny Buenafe, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau
