MANILA - Negros Oriental will undergo an enhanced community quarantine starting April 3 to halt the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the provincial government said Wednesday.

Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo on Tuesday signed an executive order placing the entire province, home to nearly a million people, under lockdown until April 18.

The provincial government ordered its residents to stay at home, will limit business operations of establishments, suspend public transit, and restrict land and sea travel, among others.

Essential services providers such as medical practitioners, authorized government workers, accredited press members, truck drivers and farmers, among others, are exempted from the lockdown.

The province has so far recorded 4 coronavirus infections, with 2 deaths. Local health authorities are also keeping an eye on 309 patients under investigation (PUIs) and 6,342 persons under monitoring (PUMs).

As of Wednesday, the number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines has risen to 2,311. Of the number, 96 have died while 50 have recovered from the fast-spreading disease.
