CEBU - Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director General Isidro Lapeña expressed support for the postponement of the sangguniang kabataan and barangay elections this October.

His support for President Rodrigo Duterte's stance in favor of postponement is to prevent incumbent officials allegedly involved in the illegal drug trade from using illegally-acquired funds to fuel their candidacies, Lapeña said.

Lapeña said that they have started monitoring village officials who were linked to the illegal drug trade. However, he refused to divulge how many were in the list.

PDEA-Central Visayas has already required all barangay officials in Cebu City to submit the list of alleged major drug pushers in their areas of responsibility.

PDEA Regional Director Yogi Ruiz said that the crackdown on suspected drug dealers is ongoing.

On Tuesday, Lapeña visited Cebu to spearhead the groundbreaking of a classroom which will be the venue for the Anti-Illegal Drug Awareness Lectures in the coming months.

The building was donated by the Cebu City Government.

Aside from the building, Mayor Tomas Osmeña also committed to provide 100 K9 units to PDEA-Central Visayas. He said that the local government plans to build a facility where drug surrenderers can be trained as dog handlers, as part of their rehabilitation.
