MANILA - House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez on Saturday said the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections will likely push through in May despite moves for another postponement.
"Tuloy na ang barangay elections dahil walang Senate counterpart kaya malabo na talagang mapostpone ito. Comelec (Commission on Elections) is ready naman for the elections," Alvarez said at the oath-taking of new PDP-Laban members in Sultan Kudarat.
Last Monday, the House of Representatives approved on final reading House Bill 7378, which seeks to postpone the May 2018 Barangay and SK Elections to the 2nd Monday of October 2018.
If the measure becomes a law, this will be the third postponement of the barangay and SK polls. The Senate, however, has expressed coldness to the proposals.
Several lawmakers seek the cancellation of the barangay and SK elections in May to make way for a plebiscite on a new charter.
The barangay and SK elections were earlier announced to finally push through on May 14 following a series of delays.
The last barangay elections were held in October 2013, while the last SK elections were held in October 2010. --With a report from Jay Dayupay, ABS-CBN News
