TALIPAO, Sulu--Two Abu Sayyaf bandits were killed in a clash with government forces Tuesday afternoon here.
Colonel Gerry Besana, the Western Mindanao Command spokesperson, said soldiers from the 2nd Special Forces Battalion led by First Lieutenant Rhoy Lanzar encountered at least five armed bandits in Binuang village.
The soldiers recovered the bodies of two bandits during the clearing operation.
It was part of an ongoing military campaign against those responsible for the Jolo cathedral bombing on January 27, which left at least 23 dead and more than a hundred wounded.
One of the slain bandits was identified as Angah Ajid, an Abu Sayyaf sub-commander who was involved in the 2000 Sipadan kidnapping.
The 10-minute battle also resulted in the recovery of at least 2 high powered firearms left by the bandits, an M-14 rifle, an M-16 rifle with an attached M-203, and several magazines and ammunition.
