Grateful and humbled
ABS-CBN Corp. said it was “grateful and humbled” over President Duterte’s acceptance of an apology for a controversial campaign ad in the last presidential elections. The President’s daughter Sara said she supports the renewal of the network’s franchise. Congress is also being bogged down by procedural issues on the franchise. Sen. Ping Lacson said ABS-CBN needs a new franchise from Congress and not an authority from the National Telecommunications Commission. Sen. Grace Poe insisted that a concurrent resolution extending the franchise is still needed. House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said a joint resolution on the franchise of ABS-CBN will “create more issues and problems.”

Infighting
The issue of the network’s franchise is also causing division in the House of Representatives. Cayetano claimed Rep. Lord Allan Velasco is promising budget and chairmanships to congressmen in an apparent bid to stage a coup. The Palace said President Duterte who gave his blessing to a power-sharing scheme between Cayetano and Velasco, won’t interfere in House’s leadership issues “unless asked.” Velasco said he would honor the term-sharing deal with Cayetano.

More infected
COVID is spreading more around the world as countries report their first cases of the coronavirus. Greece, Estonia, Denmark and Norway are reporting their first cases. In Kuwait, national holiday celebrations have been cancelled. Saudi Arabia has tightened travel to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Face masks are running out in Italy. Two people are dead in France as French President Emmanuel Macron said they are “facing an epidemic.” And Hong Kong health officials said a second Filipina has been infected by the coronavirus.

Trouble with travel
The outbreak is also causing havoc and confusion on travel and tourism. Philippine officials are struggling to implement a travel ban on South Korea without any guidelines. Officials said the guidelines will be released by soon. Also, 26 Koreans from Daegu City who arrived in the Philippines have been quarantined. Daegu City is in the region where COVID is spreading rapidly in South Korea.
