MANILA- Police Lt. Col. Jovie Espenido must have “some reason” to fear for his life, Malacañang said Thursday even as it assured the police officer of government protection.

This after Espendio, who was earlier included in the Philippine National Police’s drug list said he believed that only the government or the police would kill him.

“If that is Col. Espenido’s fear, we cannot stop him [from having] such apprehension. He must have some reasons,” Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a message.

Espenido, who was tagged in the killing of drug-linked politicians, said his inclusion in the drug watch list was a police failure of intelligence. Drug syndicates also want him dead, he added.

But the Palace assured that President Duterte will not allow anyone to hurt Espenido.

“(President Duterte) will not allow any harm to anyone outside of legal processes and methods sanctioned by law,” Panelo said.

Malacañang stood by Espenido after the police official was linked to illegal drugs, saying Duterte believes that the reports were “untrue.”
