Alleged Abu Sayyaf killed in Tawi-Tawi shootout

BONGAO, Tawi-Tawi - A suspected member of the Abu Sayyaf was killed in a shootout with police and military forces at a checkpoint in Barangay Lapid-Lapid, authorities said.

The suspect, Shaiful Julaili, allegedly fired at soldiers in the area and tried to elude a checkpoint, according to the the Naval Forces Western Mindanao.

Julaili sustained a gunshot wound on his chest and was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

The suspect is allegedly in cahoots with Sulu-based Abu Sayyaf members to kidnap people from the boundary of Tawi-Tawi and Sabah, Malaysia.

Authorities in Tawi-Tawi are on alert following attacks in Sulu and Zamboanga City.
