MANILA—Police arrested in an entrapment operation in Malabon City a suspected hitman and his companion for allegedly extorting money from a businessman.

An unlicensed firearm and marked money were confiscated from the suspects. They will be named once formally charged in court.

The businessman told ABS-CBN News that the suspects demanded P150,000 in exchange for his life.

He first received a letter on December 17 indicating that someone wanted him dead.

The alleged "hitman" wrote in the letter that he was responsible for killing the victim's nephew in Caloocan in 2018.

"Para manatili raw akong buhay ay tapatan ko raw 'yung halaga na ipinatong sa ulo ko," the victim said.

When he failed to pay the entire amount, the death threats persisted; in some cases, bullets were inserted with the letters.

The victim sought the help of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Quezon City Field Unit.

When the alleged hitman's companion received the marked money from a remittance center in Barangay Tañong, the 2 men were arrested.

"Akala niya OK na 'yung P100,000. 'Yun pala hinahanap pa 'yung natitirang P50,000," Chief Insp. Joey Caise of CIDG said.

The suspects declined to comment on the allegations. They will face complaints for robbery-extortion, grave threat, illegal possession of firearms, and violation of Omnibus Election Code.

Caise said police are looking into whether those arrested were the lone suspects or more were involved. — Report from Maan Macapagal, ABS-CBN News
