MANILA - Operatives of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Thursday seized 8 drums of suspected smuggled oil at the Taganito Special Economic Zone in Claver, Surigao del Norte, the bureau said Saturday.
In a statement, the BOC said officers received a tip through their hotline that the drums of oil were allegedly discharged from a vessel located in Taganito HPAL (THPAL) Nickel Corporation.
A team was dispatched to the Taganito Economic Zone to inspect the place Thursday following the tip.
After questioning the THPAL manager, authorities were informed that the oil drums were placed at a yard inside the economic zone.
Upon inspection, the BOC found that the drums contained "suspected palm oil," with its samples taken by authorities for further analysis and confirmation.
According the BOC's initial investigation, the drums, found to lack transport documents, were allegedly discharged from an MT Southern Narwhal vessel on January 13.
The items were then turned over to authorities in compliance with Section 113 of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
