MANILA—Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. on Tuesday said there was a consensus among members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to hold a special summit with the United States government in its country.

In a tweet, Locsin said the ASEAN arrived at a consensus in Nha Trang city, Vietnam, where foreign ministers met last week.

The secretary added that US President Donald Trump “really wants [President Rodrigo] Duterte” to attend.

Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Duterte could visit the US for the summit but has not committed to anything.

Duterte once said he would never travel to the US during his presidency, although he has never issued a formal statement on the matter.
