MANILA- As Filipinos scrambled for safety from the rumbling Taal Volcano, some pets were left behind in ash-covered towns.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society on Monday found dogs, cows, and chickens left behind in the town of Talisay in Batangas as residents fled to safer grounds.

The pets were among "hundreds of animals left behind by their owners who have evacuated," PAWS said.

The group said it is leaving food and water for the chained and stray animals in the area.

It also urged the public to donate food, old kennel cabs, food bowls, and chain-cutters for its relief operations.

Alert level 4 remained over parts of the province, with disaster officials saying a "hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days."
