MANILA - Cops have built a human barricade along the path of the Black Nazarene, preventing devotees from reaching the miraculous image.

Around 13,000 policemen were deployed in this year's Traslacion, which did not sit well with some devotees who complained they were unable to get near the Nazarene icon because of policemen.

Earlier, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said the government may implement more changes in the Traslacion 2021 after several changes in this year’s procession sped up the Philippines’ largest religious procession.

Moreno, who has been organizing the Traslation since his stint as Manila vice mayor, did not give specific plans but hinted: “Unang-una piyesta ng Quiapo, hindi piyesta ng Luneta, hindi piyesta ng Malate.”

(First, it is the feast of Quiapo not the feast of Luneta, not the feast of Malate.)

“We might consider more changes in the near future because we have also to respect others’ rights to use the roads lalo na yung mga major thoroughfares,” he told ABS-CBN News.

Officials earlier surrounded the Black Nazarene’s bier with police officials to speed up the hours-long procession.

But the move dismayed devotees who have been used to climbing in front of the carriage or carrying it themselves.

Moreno earlier said that he did not worry much about his political capital, saying that the city government was only doing its job.

“The goal is to make it as solemn as possible and as safe as possible,” he said.
