MANILA (UPDATE)- President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Court of Appeals (CA) Justice Samuel Gaerlan to the Supreme Court, Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said Wednesday.

Gaerlan takes the associate justice position vacated by Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta who recently assumed leadership of the high court.

A graduate of the San Beda College of Law, Gaerlan completes the 15-man high tribunal.

Gaerlan spent 26 years in the judiciary, starting as a municipal trial court judge in La Union for 8 years, and regional trial court judge for another 8 years before joining CA.

Panelo said Gaerlan is set to take his oath before the President on Wednesday afternoon.
