MANILA - (UPDATE) The second of four programmed salary increases for the police and the military will be given this year, one of President Rodrigo Duterte's economic managers said on Tuesday.
"There will be another round of salary increase this year, both for civilian and military and policemen," Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno said.
President Rodrigo Duterte promised during the campaign to double the salary of security forces, which could come as early as January 2018, Diokno said.
"I have actually submitted to the Office of the President a copy of the bill and this would only require (a) joint resolution from both the Senate and the House," Diokno said.
"And going by the behavior of Congress, they won’t object to a salary increase because it’s a popular move," Diokno added.
Under the 2017 adjustments, a Police Officer I (PO1) will receive a total annual compensation of P473,625, compared to P355,290 during the previous year.
A Private will receive P436,138 from P342,936 previously.
The first round of salary increases was given last year.
Aside from the military and police, the government has also promised to increase the salaries of public school teachers.
