MANILA -- Found at the side of a nondescript building along Chino Roces Avenue in Makati, The Bevvy at Don Revy may be challenging to find. But when one finally gazes at their bright signage that cuts at the heavy darkness of night like an alcoholic beacon of hope — it does feel like the makings of a good time.

A classy hole-in-the-wall, The Bevvy has interiors like a casual gentleman’s club — with wooden tables and comfortable couches scattered in between wine-and-liquor-lined shelves. At the corner, a bar with Czech beers-on-tap grounds the space.

“We just thought of making a showroom from the idle space that we had, so we could invite people to do wine tasting, as opposed to us going to restaurants. Now that we invite people here, have them taste the wines, try the wines, and of course, the award-winning beers on tap,” explained Jojo G. Vega, managing director of Don Revy.

Don Revy distributes wine and liquor from around the world in the Philippines, and The Bevvy (named for the British slang word for an alcoholic drink or enjoying an alcoholic drink) is their office cum showroom.

Every bottle in the Bevvy can be bought (on retail prices) and enjoyed at home or drunk in the premises. Bar chow like crispy pata, beef brisket, nachos, and cold cuts are provided by nearby Smoking Joint, while a caterer is on call for event rentals.

For a quick drink, the Bevvy’s menu has wine starting at P120/glass, whisky at P90/glass, award-winning beers at P120, and even gin and tonics for P100. But if you’re there to indulge, we recommend perusing their shelves and opting for a bottle.

“The positioning of Don Revy has always been, bringing in what’s new and what’s next in the world of beverages. We don’t carry traditional labels. We don’t carry mainstream labels. We carry new concepts that the market hasn’t seen,” said Vega.

This translates to the Bevvy’s shelves stuffed to the brim with new world wines from aperitifs to digestifs, to unique liquor like whiskey and gin. It may seem daunting to find the bottle for your tastes, but the Bevvy staff are at the ready to answer queries and nudge you to the right libation.

During our visit, Vega was our "spirit guide," and here were some of the wines and gins that he highly recommended.

Pebble Beach is Don Revy’s signature line from New Zealand, which started in 2011 with one varietal, the Sauvignon Blanc. This mid-price line (P750-P900++/bottle) has grown since then, and now includes Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay in its line.

More premium selections in his list originate from the best New World-style producing regions (per style) in Australia: the Tiger Pinot Noir (P1,195-P4,000/bottle) is from Central Otago; the Elderton Shiraz (P790-P4,500/bottle) is from Barossa valley; and lastly, the Parker Cabernet Sauvignon (P700-5,000/bottle) is from the Coonawarra Estate.

His award-winning gin recommendations include the Old Tom Gin (P1,850/bottle ) by the City of London, a double gold award winner in the San Francisco Spirits Competition 2017, and Mary Le Bone London Dry Gin (P3,050/bottle) which also won the same award in 2018.

For something more exotic, Whitley Neill (P1775/bottle) has infused handcrafted gins with flavors from around the world (Blood Orange from Spain, Rhubarb and Ginger from Scotland, etc.), sip or mix with any of the premium Lamb & Watt organic tonic water variants (P80/bottle) and discover why Whitney Neill has become the UK’s number one premium gin.

The Bevvy at the Don Revy can be found in the UPRC III Building, Chino Roces Ave. in Makati and is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
