MANILA—A Korean national who graduated with a degree in Filipino won the Internet's heart with her achievement.
Professor Jovy Peregrino of University of the Philippines Diliman posted a graduation photo of Jiyoon Kim, 23, on his Facebook page, congratulating his student for her achievement.
Congratulations then poured in for Kim in her personal Facebook page.
"I received lots of celebration from [people in the] Philippines who don't know about me before. It is [a] great honor to me," Kim told ABS-CBN News.
It was her two-month stay in Bulacan in 2015 that convinced Kim to major in Filipino.
According to Kim, when she was a freshman student at the Division of Southeast Asian Studies in Busan University of Foreign Studies, she had the chance to study basic courses about different Southeast Asian countries.
She took a basic Filipino course, and she got very interested in it.
"My Filipino professor, Jovy, was super nice. He showed various sides of [the] Philippines to us," Kim said.
After deciding on majoring in Filipino, Kim returned to the Philippines in 2018 as a visiting student in UP Diliman.
Kim graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Filipino from her university on August 23.
"I was so happy to study Filipino culture and language during my university days. All people I met in the Philippines are so nice and kind," Kim said.
"I would not succeed to finish my studies without their help."
Kim is currently enjoying her free time after graduation, but given the chance she said she wishes to work in the Philippines.
