LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- A Filipino-American comic book creator has come up with a Pinoy superhero character called “Kawal.”

Quincy Victoria is an office manager by day and comics artist by night. The 44-year-old is the artist behind “Kawal: The Soldier of the People.”

“My characters has always been around for the 3 years that I’ve been there. I wouldn’t put the Filipino flag in there and this year with my new prints, I actually put the Filipino flag in there and it caught people's eye,” he said.

Victoria said he got his talent for drawing from his dad. But paying attention to detail is a skill he developed growing up.

“I wanted to bring a character that was very much Captain America, very much Robin Hood, even Deadpool. The Filipinos have a very signature style of humor so I wanted to bring that about,” he said.

The Kawal story follows the adventure of Ricky Valiente, who lives in the slums of the Philippines. Valiente got his powers from Mayari, goddess of combat in Tagalog mythology.

Kawal fights for the poor with his super strength, agility, and ability to create energy weapons.

Along with Kawal is Baltog, a Bicolano warrior teaming up to fight for the underdogs.

“I just try to concentrate on a good story and also at the same time try to raise awareness to who we are as Filipinos,” he said.

Victoria concedes that success in the comic book industry may have been elusive to some comic artists. But for him, showcasing diversity and Filipino heritage gives him motivation.

He will be in this year's Great American Comic Con in Las Vegas on November 26 and 27.
